Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the country’s only refuge for savannah species, Akagera is home to a diverse array of wildlife, from lion and leopard to the rare shoebill and eastern black rhino.
Experience: Guests can enjoy thrilling game drives, birding adventures, or try their hand at catch-and-release fishing. Two luxurious pontoons and a swamp cruiser enable scenic lake outings, picnic lunches, and sunset cocktails, while immersive wildlife tracking experiences contribute to conservation efforts.
Purpose: Wilderness Magashi Peninsula embodies a purpose-driven ethos, combining luxury tourism with impactful conservation and community initiatives in partnership with African Parks and the Rwanda Development board, collectively called the Akagera Management Company.
Wildlife: With 10 identified vegetation biomes in the park, Akagera supports a large diversity and density of wildlife. The park is home to leopard and lion, white rhinos, eastern black rhinos, buffalo, Masai giraffe, zebra, and interesting antelope such as topi, roan antelope, the elusive sitatunga, and oribi, alongside 520 bird species, including the rare and sought-after shoebill. This remarkable conservation success story owes its achievements to species reintroductions and a sustainable management partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks.

Wilderness Magashi Peninsula - Birding
After an early breakfast in camp, gear up for a thrilling bird watching experience. Akagera National Park is renowned as one of the best birding areas in the world with more than 500 species recorded here. A bird count comparable with the larger Kruger National Park. Rarities include the papyrus gonolek (restricted to the papyrus swamps), the localised red-faced barbet, and the swamp flycatcher.
Wilderness Magashi Peninsula - Boating *
Two luxurious pontoons and a swamp cruiser enable scenic lake outings, picnic lunches, and sunset cocktails. Wildlife viewing from the water is exceptional, with regular sightings of rhino, elephant, and buffalo, and even leopard and lion on occasion.* Possible year round.
Wilderness Magashi Peninsula - Fishing
Fishing on a catch-and-release basis only is permitted year-round, with the camp providing basic fishing equipment.
