Tanzania

Tanzania is an East African country known for its vast wilderness areas. They include the plains of Serengeti National Park, a safari mecca populated by the “big five” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), and Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain. Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with a marine park home to whale sharks and coral reefs.

Safari happens almost everywhere you look in Tanzania. It’s been a way of life in East Africa’s second-largest country for decades. Few destinations in Africa can rival Tanzania’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes. From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches and coral reefs of Zanzibar, a Tanzania safari delivers one massive experience after another.

The Serengeti National Park, meaning “endless plains” in the Maasai language, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas and is an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers.

Stretching itself across 1.5 million hectares of land, the Serengeti National Park is known for its impressive population of wildlife—most notably the Big 5. It is perhaps more renowned for being part of the stage on which the annual Great Migration plays out. Each year, over two million wildebeest, a fair number of gazelles, and small following of zebra seek better grazing areas by migrating south in the Serengeti, then west and north into the Maasai Mara before eventually returning.
