Overview
Sala’s Camp offers an exceptional and personalised safari experience with space, comfort and stunning views.
Accommodating up to 22 guests in seven luxury tents dotted along the Sand River, guests are treated to the casual elegance of safari days-gone-by whilst being surrounded by contemporary touches like private plunge pools and glass-fronted tents. The camp’s interiors are elegant and comfortable and all rooms have en-suite bathrooms with bathtub and shower, running water and flushing toilets. Electricity is solar-powered (with a standby generator for refrigeration and charging) and a focus on sustainable practices includes tree-planting and water saving initiatives and a large organic veggie garden. Typically, after an exciting game drive and exceptional wildlife sightings, return to relax in your hammock, lounge by your private plunge pool or indulge in a massage from the expert therapist. Head out in the late afternoon for a special sundowner experience with the vintage mobile bar Eleanor, before enjoying dinner served under the stars.
Sala’s Camp prides itself on its hospitality and all arrangements are made with meticulous care. Guests enjoy full-board during their stay, which includes all meals and drinks (excluding champagne and specially imported wines and spirits). There are activities on offer for children of all ages and a 'baby listening' service is available. The camp is suitable for guests with limited disabilities and special meals can be catered for by prior arrangement.

Tucked away where two rivers meet, Sala’s Camp is safari at its most serene. Think Masai Mara game drives without the crowds, hammocks with a view and fireside feasts under the stars. From charming sundowners with Eleanor (our vintage mobile bar) to spa time in the wild, every detail is carefully curated. Come for the big cats, stay for the quiet magic - and help protect it all as you go.
The Sala's Camp Experience
Sala’s Camp enjoys the privilege of being the first Mara property to welcome the spectacle that is the annual wildebeest migration. This season the gnus arrived early and in earnest, crossing the Tanzanian border in front of the camp in huge, vocal numbers. The timing of the wildebeests’ arrival could not be more fitting as Sala’s re-opens to welcome its first guests of the season with a new look befitting one of the world’s most astounding natural phenomena. While still embracing the traditional ‘under-canvas’ safari camp, Sala’s has also incorporated contemporary elements like glass doors and plunge pools, lending just the right amount of modern luxury to what remains an authentic safari feel.

Classic Portfolio Sustainable Mega Fam: Kenya
In October 2016, The Safari Collection was involved in the travel industries first-ever Sustainable Mega Familiarisation trip. We hosted eight leading travel experts from around the globe at our properties. The trip was stitched together to allow the travel experts to become intimately acquainted with the pillars of sustainable tourism in Africa; conservation of natural resources and wildlife, involvement and development of local communities, and commercial sustainability of authentic experiences. This video describes what makes The Safari Collection portfolio stand out from the crowd in both experiences and sustainability and why staying at all of our four properties will give you the most epic safari of a life time.
'The First Noel' from The Safari Collection and Maia Von Lekow
Our Christmas video for 2016 has been recorded in Kenya by Kenyan musician Maia Von Lekow. We are also giving a contribution to our sustainability fund on behalf of every guest staying with us this Christmas Season. Thank you for helping us keep the spirit of Christmas giving alive all year round!
Making a splash at Sala's Camp!
We are making a splash with our new plunge pools at Sala’s Camp! Here is a short clip of the team having a silly but absolutely splashing time! As of 1st December each of our seven tents now enjoy private plunge pools with a spacious deck overlooking the Sand River and rolling hills of the northern Serengeti. This new pool side paradise is the perfect place to unwind and relax after the excitement of your day’s game drive. Cool off with a refreshing cocktail and dip your toes whilst watching the wonders of the Masai Mara pass by.
Zawadi ya Safari – Gift of a Journey
The season of giving is upon us and we are feeling privileged and excited to welcome our guests and give them the magical and unmatched gift of a journey to Kenya this Christmas. With only 10 sleeps to go until the big day, Christmas preparations are underway with decorations being hung, fridges filled and presents wrapped. As we wrap up the year and reflect on 2017 we would like to pass on a heartfelt thank you to all of those that have come on safari with us this year and for giving us the greatest gift of all… the gift of your journey. Every safari gives us the ability to do many wonderful things like supporting vital wildlife conservation, local communities and education projects. Over the past few months The Safari Collection team have been busy creating a Christmas video with a life size emoji box representing the gift of your journey and the people it brings joy to along the way. Working with Maia Von Lekow and her African version of 'Jingle Bells' we hope that this short, fun film will bring a smile to your face and some Christmas cheer to your heart! Thank you for the gift of your journey, the most meaningful gift that you can give!
Sala's Camp: A Pangolin Paradise
Sala’s Camp is one of the top locations in Kenya (and even Africa) to see the endangered pangolin which is perhaps the most unusual and elusive creature to see whilst on safari. We are incredibly lucky as once a month we have seen one of these very rare and retiring nocturnal creatures close to Sala's Camp.
Snapshot of Sala's Camp
The beautiful Sala’s Camp with its seven luxury tents and idyllic location offers a once in a lifetime experience for travellers. This remarkable place delivers a clever mix of the traditional and the comfortable, and is renowned for combining an authentic safari experience with hospitality and fine dining. Sala’s enjoys the privilege of being one of the first Masai Mara properties to welcome the spectacle that is the annual wildebeest migration.
'Twas The Night Before Christmas' by The Safari Collection
This festive season, nothing is more precious than the special time spent together with loved ones. The most priceless gift of all this Christmas is the ‘gift of experience’; a time for sharing, cherishing and deepening family bonds. This year, we are excited to share The Safari Collection’s very own version of our favourite festive poem, which captures the magic of an exciting family adventure through a child’s eyes on safari. We hope that it makes your spirits soar and inspires you to cherish the ‘gift of experience’ with your friends and family this Christmas. From all of us here at The Safari Collection, we wish you a magical, memorable festive season with your loved ones.
Journey to the Pride Lands
The Safari Collection's Lion King Safari trailer captures the magic of Kenya’s real ‘circle of life’. This trailer is a taster of our privately led Lion King Adventure that will throw you into close encounters with all of the ‘real’ characters from the film and enable you to experience the magic and majesty of the breath-taking African Savannah which inspired Disney. Activities
What you can do
BUSH GYM
Sala’s Camp has a small, but well-equipped gym for guests to use at their leisure and really work up an appetite for the scrumptious cuisine! Each tent also has a ‘gym-in-a-bag’ for guests to use during their stay, containing a yoga mat, skipping rope and post safari stretch card with some simple exercises to relax the body.
FOR CHILDREN
Our guides and spotters love taking younger guests under their wing, helping them become enthralled by the wild. They might enjoy spotting the ‘little five’ and the ‘ugly five’ on game drives or finding animal tracks with their guide on a nature walk around camp. The shallow sandy riverbed in front of camp is ideal for little ones to splash about in during the wet season or dig around and spot animal spoor when it’s dry. Budding warriors can learn how to make a Maasai bow and arrow or how to make a fire using traditional techniques. Evening activities might include roasting marshmallows and making popcorn around the fire or searching for glow worms and frogs by torchlight. The camp is well-stocked with a selection of board games, including Scrabble, Kumiliki (African Monopoly), Chess, Liar Dice, Backgammon, cards and Mancala.
GAME DRIVES
The anticipation and excitement of setting off in a 4 x 4 to explore the African bush is what being on safari is all about. The area around Sala’s Camp is teeming with diverse wildlife and Sala's fleet of professional guides are eager to tell guests about the plants and animals they come across. Guests staying longer might wish to venture further into the Mara and head out for the day with a picnic lunch. Each game drive vehicle is specially designed to ensure maximum game viewing and comfort. Kitted out with Maasai blankets and ponchos to keep warm, sunscreen, fridges filled with cold drinks, hot drinks, books and sweets, there's everything to keep you happy during a game drive.
GET ARTY ON SAFARI
Each tent has a paint set and sketch pad for guests to use during their stay. Get creative in the camp’s idyllic, artistic surroundings and paint the unique scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna.
NATURE AND BIRDING WALKS
Join your Masai Guide for an exploratory amble around the camp environment. This gentle stroll is a great way for both adults and children alike to stretch their legs in-between game drives. You’ll be surprised by just how many smaller creatures and birds there are to spot around camp. It’s also fascinating to learn about the traditional uses of some of the plants and trees you’ll come across. Children might like looking for wildlife tracks, finding feathers and learning to identify different types of animal dung! If you are staying with us for several days and would like to go on a longer walk outside of camp, there is an area in the reserve approximately an hour away where you can amble along a small gorge of the Sand River.
RIVERBED GAMES: BOULES & VOLLEY BALL
During the dry months, the sandy riverbed in front of Sala’s Camp turns into a perfect volleyball pitch as well as the ideal place for a game of boules. Sala’s Camp has everything you need for both games. There are no hippos or crocodiles to worry about in the area, so enjoy unleashing your competitive side.
SPA TREATMENTS
From a secluded shady corner of camp, or from the comfort of your own room, indulge in one of our therapeutic treatments. We use spa products by Healing Earth, a premium organic brand inspired by ancient African healing traditions.
SUNDOWNERS
Sundowners are an essential part of any safari experience and there really is nothing better than watching the African sun sink low on the horizon over the vast animal filled plains of the Masai Mara. The fabulous vintage mobile bar at Sala's (named Eleanor) adds a special touch to the sundowner experience here. Fully stocked with everything needed to make cocktails, mocktails or whatever the drink of choice, plus delicious canapes to nibble on, it makes for an unforgettable evening spent in nature.
SUNRISE BALLOON SAFARI
Soaring high over the savannah on a sunrise balloon safari is a truly unforgettable and magical experience. Glide silently above the plains and spot wildlife as you experience 360 degree views as far as the eye can see. Balloon rides are particularly magnificent during the migration, when you will witness millions of animals grazing on a green carpet below you. Please refer to our rates sheet for the latest ballooning costs which include a champagne bush breakfast.
WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
Sala’s is the first camp in the Mara to witness the phenomenal movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and other antelope, which move year round on a circular migratory route in the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Guests staying between July and October might be lucky enough to catch the animals thundering by. Watching a river crossing is a tense and thrilling spectacle and will bring you face to face with the brutal reality of mother nature. Do check dates before travelling if you don’t want to miss this, as timings vary each year depending on when the rains begin.
