Nyerere, formerly part of the vast Selous G Reserve in southern Tanzania, is Africa’s largest protected wildlife area. It offers untouched wilderness of rivers, lakes, and savannahs teeming with life. Visitors can see elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, and over 440 bird species. Dar es Salaam-Nyerere National Park

After an early breakfast in Dar es Salaam, depart by road to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). The drive takes around 4–5 hours, passing through vibrant villages, farmlands, and stretches of natural miombo woodlands before reaching the park gate. Entering the park, enjoy a game drive en route to Serena Mivumo River Lodge, spotting elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, and perhaps even lions or African wild dogs along the way. Arrive at the lodge in time for lunch overlooking the Rufiji River, then head out on an afternoon game drive exploring the park’s diverse landscapes—open savannahs, riverine forests, and oxbow lakes teeming with hippos and crocodiles. Return to the lodge at sunset for relaxation, dinner, and overnight at Serena Mivumo River Lodge.

Day 2

Nyerere National Park - Game Drive and Boat Safari

As dawn breaks over Nyerere National Park, golden light spreads across vast savannahs, palm-dotted woodlands and winding waterways, setting the stage for an exhilarating morning game drive. Lions, leopards and hyenas are still active in the cool air, while herds of elephants, buffalo, zebras and antelopes graze the floodplains beside graceful giraffes. Birdlife dazzles with kingfishers, fish eagles and bee-eaters flashing color against the sky. After lunch, an afternoon boat safari along the Rufiji River reveals a new world: pods of hippos snorting in the shallows, crocodiles basking on sandy banks, and elephants descending to drink as African skimmers and spoonbills sweep the water’s edge. After an early breakfast, set out on a guided walking safari accompanied by an experienced armed ranger, immersing yourself in the untamed beauty of Nyerere National Park. This intimate experience lets you see details often missed from a vehicle—fresh animal tracks, unique plants, colorful birds, and the quiet rhythms of the African bush. As you continue on your final game drive en route to the main gate, enjoy sweeping savannahs dotted with baobabs, winding river channels, and seasonal wetlands alive with wildlife. Expect sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelopes, and perhaps predators such as lions or wild dogs, along with an impressive array of bird species.
