Experience: Truly one of Earth’s ultimate, untamed places, Tubu Tree is the ideal setting for exhilarating wildlife encounters. Renowned for its predator sightings, from exciting day and night game drives look out for solitary leopards on the prowl, and wild dogs and hyenas. On a traditional dugout canoe, or mokoro, explore the Delta channels here – alive with scores of brilliant birds, tiny reed frogs and mud-caked hippos. Catch-and-release fishing and boating complete the safari experiences at Tubu Tree.
Purpose: In our quest to conserve and protect the world’s most iconic wildlife destinations, we are intimately involved in projects that support sustainable conservation, specifically curbing poaching and overfishing.
Wildlife: A wildlife wonderland, guests can look forward to remarkable sightings here on Hunda Island, the largest dryland area in this iconic wetland. Look out for elephant, Burchell’s zebra, red lechwe, southern giraffe, tsessebe and blue wildebeest in the floodplains. Kudu, impala, bushbuck, and leopard are usually seen in the forested areas. A beautiful variety of birdlife can also be seen. Dryland species can be spotted on the larger islands, and a multitude of wetland birds can be seen in the floodplains and waterways.
Tubu Tree: As its name indicates, this eight-tented traditional-style camp is set into a tree canopy on elevated wooden walkways, with uninterrupted views over the surrounding floodplains. The family unit has two adjoining tents, separate bathrooms and a shared lounge. The main area, set around a majestic anthill, features finishes like light oak, live-edge wood, rattan, and thatch, bringing wilderness elements indoors. By day, the pool deck invites quiet contemplation of the panoramic view, while the Tubu Star Bed offers a romantic night under the magnificent African sky.

The Journey In – New Safari Vehicles at Jao Reserve
This video highlights the delivery of the new Toyota Land Cruiser safari vehicles travelling from Maun into the Jao Reserve. These vehicles replace our long-serving heritage fleet of Land Rovers and form part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a modern, reliable fleet in one of Africa’s most remote safari environments. Operating in the Okavango Delta presents unique logistical challenges, and ensuring that our vehicles and equipment remain in top operating condition is essential to delivering a safe and comfortable safari experience. Purpose-built for comfort, safety, and exceptional visibility, these custom game viewer vehicles allow guests to explore the Delta from an elevated perspective. Spacious seating, open sides, and uninterrupted window views ensure that every guest enjoys a prime vantage point for wildlife viewing and photography. The vehicles are used for daily safari activities across the reserve and are designed to carry up to six guests, with each seat offering excellent visibility of the surrounding wilderness. For many guests, the journey from the airstrip to camp, and every drive that follows, is where the safari truly begins.
Activities
What you can do
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Birding
The Jao Reserve is a must for bird enthusiasts, with large concentrations of wattled crane, as well as slaty egret, rosy-throated longclaw and African skimmer. In contrast, the dryer Hunda Island sports crimson-breasted shrike and Meyer’s parrot.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Boating *
Water-level dependent, excursions in our boat allow for good game viewing in the channels further away from camp, often yielding fabulous sightings of hippo and crocodile and maybe even the elusive sitatunga.* Water levels permitting.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Fishing *
Fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment is on offer seasonally on a catch and release basis.* Note that fishing is seasonal as it is prohibited by Botswana law in January and February due to breeding purposes.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Game Drives
Morning and afternoon game drives on Hunda Island reveal the spectacular wildlife here where leopard and other big game often feature.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Guided Nature Walks *
A walking safari offers you the exciting opportunity of observing the smaller things you miss when travelling by vehicle. Step out in the wilderness with our skilled guides, and feel the thrill of being at one with nature. * Seasonal and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Mokoro Excursions *
There is no better way of enjoying the crystal-clear waters of the Delta and its wildlife than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), which reveal the smaller fascinating critters and striking waterbirds of the region. There is no better way to experience the Okavango Delta waterways at eye-level. * Water levels permitting.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Night Drives
A one-of-a-kind safari experience awaits after dark where we go in search of the extraordinary creatures of the night. Porcupine, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and lesser bushbaby are just some of these.
Wilderness Tubu Tree – Star Bed
In the evenings an elevated deck is beautifully transformed into a wonderful star bed that offers a unique wilderness experience under the star studded African sky.
