Birding
Birding at Gomoti Villas is a richly rewarding experience, both within the lodge’s grounds and while out on expertly guided game drives. Set along the seasonal Gomoti River in the southern reaches of the Okavango Delta, the lodge is surrounded by a mosaic of habitats—from seasonal wetlands and lily-dotted lagoons to dense riverine forests and open woodlands—each providing a haven for a remarkable variety of birdlife. In camp, early mornings are filled with the melodic calls of white-browed robin-chats and the drumming of woodpeckers, while African paradise flycatchers flit through the trees and malachite kingfishers perch at the water’s edge. The diversity of species observable without even leaving camp is astounding, making it a birdwatcher’s sanctuary.Venturing out on game drives—offers birders the chance to explore a wider range of ecosystems and encounter both resident and migratory species. Moremi’s floodplains, mopane woodlands, and papyrus-lined channels are home to iconic birds like the wattled crane, Pel’s fishing owl, and slaty egret—each a coveted sighting. Raptors such as bateleurs and African fish eagles soar above the canopy, while bee-eaters, rollers, and hornbills add flashes of color.

Game drive transfer from Gomito Villas to Khwai
Your day begins at dawn with a gentle wake-up call at your lodge, followed by a light pre-departure breakfast. As the sun warms the delta, you depart on your morning game drive into the iconic NG34/35 area, renowned for its diverse habitats. Along the way, your guide shares insights into the local flora, fauna, and conservation efforts. You travel toward South Gate, passing through dense vegetation between NG34 and NG35—a stretch offering excellent opportunities to spot wildlife moving between feeding and resting areas. At South Gate, park entry formalities are completed before continuing along the historic “old cutline road” to Khwai through expansive mopane forests. While not a high-density game area, this region often presents sightings of elephants, buffalo, and rarer species such as eland, sable, and occasionally roan antelope.Mid-morning, you pause for a picnic breakfast beneath a tree, soaking in the tranquility of the wilderness. Approaching the village of Khwai, you glimpse traditional local life before arriving at Khwai Molapo to check in and settle into your accommodation. The afternoon is at leisure, with time to relax, enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool, and a light lunch.
Mokoro
The mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe once used by communities of the Okavango Delta to navigate shallow floodplains and winding channels, remains one of the most iconic and intimate ways to explore this unique ecosystem. Although modern excursions are conducted in safe, eco-friendly fiberglass replicas, the essence of the experience remains unchanged—peaceful, immersive, and deeply connected to nature.Gliding silently just centimeters above the water’s surface, guests are gently poled through crystal-clear channels by skilled local guides. This tranquil journey offers a remarkable perspective of the Delta, allowing you to observe painted reed frogs clinging to reeds, colourful dragonflies dancing above the water, and a rich variety of birdlife at close range. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter larger wildlife along the water’s edge, all experienced without the sound of an engine to disturb the moment.Mokoro excursions are typically scheduled in the early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity is at its best. Please note that excursions are dependent on seasonal water levels and are only available when conditions allow. Mokoro is widely regarded as a quintessential Okavango Delta experience—capturing the serenity, beauty, and magic of this extraordinary wilderness.
