Kariega Game Reserve offers Big 5 safaris in a malaria-free private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Kariega is known for its beauty and variety of ecosystems. Guests have a choice of five luxury lodges to suit all needs. *Main Lodge offers 24 spacious double / twin log chalets, which are expertly integrated into the bush offering privacy and stunning views of the Kariega River valley. *Ukhozi Lodge captures the romance and intimacy of Africa, with 10 superbly appointed luxury double / twin suites, each with a private plunge pool and deck offering panoramic valley views. *River Lodge is one-of-a-kind, offering 10 luxurious & tastefully appointed double / twin suites boasting scenic deck views of the surrounding forests & valley, whilst the intimate & peaceful public areas overlook the banks of the Bushmans River. *Settlers Drift is a 5-star luxury lodge located in a remote part of the Kariega wilderness, offering a unique tented safari combined with 5-star luxury. The lodge consists of 9 spacious and luxurious double / twin tented suites, each with stunning views and secluded viewing decks. *The Homestead is a private sole-use lodge offering privacy and comfort and includes 7 large bedrooms. It is perfect for a group or family of up to 14 people and guests enjoy the flexibility to plan their day according to their own specific needs. *All lodge rates are on a fully inclusive basis, including all meals, all selected beverages, morning and evening game drives and other game activities (only Main Lodge excludes beverages). Rates exclude the conservation & community levy of R250 per adult paying guest per night and R125 per child paying guest per night.

Please see the directions to our different lodges below: MAIN RECEPTION - MAIN LODGE & UKHOZI LODGE Route 1 (Coastal): Travel from Port Elizabeth along the N2 towards Grahamstown for approximately 50 km and then take the Port Alfred turnoff, where you will then travel along the R72, via Alexandria, towards Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred. At Kenton-on-Sea turn left inland and proceed 14 km on the R343 to the main Kariega entrance. Turn right into the reserve and the guard will direct you to reception to check in. Route 2 (Inland): Proceed on the N2 from Port Elizabeth towards Grahamstown for about 110km. Turn right before reaching Grahamstown onto the tarred road (R343) to Kenton-on-Sea. Travel 32 km to the main Kariega entrance. Turn left into the reserve and the guard will direct you to reception to check in. THE HOMESTEAD Guests should confirm their arrival time prior to arrival and should then proceed directly to the lodge to check in. For the coastal route (1) continue past the main Kariega entrance and shortly after turn left at the Kariega Homestead sign. Follow the road to the lodge. For the inland route (2) travel only 30 km on the R343 and turn right at the Kariega Homestead sign. Follow the road to the lodge. RIVER LODGE Travel from Port Elizabeth along the N2 towards Grahamstown for approximately 50 km and then take the Port Alfred turnoff, where you will then travel along the R72 towards Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred. The turnoff to River Lodge is signposted and is exactly 15 km beyond Alexandria. SETTLERS DRIFT Travel from Port Elizabeth along the N2 towards Grahamstown for approximately 50 km and then take the Port Alfred turnoff, where you will then travel along the R72 towards Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred. The turnoff to Settlers Drift is signposted and is exactly 10 km beyond Alexandria. Boat Transfers A boat transfer to Settlers Drift departs daily from the jetty at 13h30 (weather dependant). For guests to be able to enjoy this transfer, they must arrive at the gate by approx. 13h00. Guests in time for the boat transfer should proceed as follows from the Settlers Drift turnoff: Drive on a gravel road through an electric gate (push button for intercom communication with the lodge) for approx. 2,8 kms to the Kariega Game Reserve and Settlers Drift entrance gate. You will be met and given directions to the jetty and carports. At the jetty you will be met by one of the Settlers Drift game rangers, who will then transfer you to the lodge by boat, which will take approx. 30 minutes. Guests who are late for the boat transfer should proceed as follows: Proceed on a gravel road through an electric gate (push button for intercom communication with the lodge) for approx. 2,8 kms to the Kariega Game Reserve and Settlers Drift entrance gate. You will be met and given directions to proceed for another approx. 6.5 kms to the lodge.

Game Drives

The Kariega Game Reserve safari experience is centered around twice daily game drives. Guests will be delighted with close up viewing of a diversity of wild African game including lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra, a host of antelope species, and much more including a myriad of exquisite birdlife. Skilled and knowledgeable game rangers will spend time unraveling some of the secrets of the African bush, will see to any specific requests, and ensure that all your questions are answered.

Unique features at River Lodge include daily boat trips to the Kenton beaches and excellent river fishing.

Enjoy a boat ride on the Bushman’s River viewing exquisite scenery and enchanting birdlife including the Crowned, Martial and African Fish Eagles.
